Have you ever been going about your life, and then, WHAM!! Everything changes?

On October 20th, 2022, Brian, my life partner, was getting ready for work and came into the bedroom to shower. From the bathroom, he turned to me and said, “Man, do you ever get one of those headaches that just runs through the base of your skull?” I nodded sleepily.

He came out of the bathroom and sat on the bed…

“My head hurts so bad! I have to sit down. Give me a minute.”

“Do you want me to rub your neck?” I asked.

“No, please don’t touch me.” As he moved to the ground.

Brian broke out in a sweat that his shirt looked like he just came out of the shower with his clothes on. He started to feel nauseous, and his hands went numb. He sat blankly on the floor as I called an ambulance.

That was how our nightmare began. Over the next 24 hours we learned that Brian had suffered a sub-arachnoid brain hemorrhage from a brain aneurism. He underwent a craniotomy the next morning with a 50% chance of making it off the surgical table alive. We spent 2 weeks in ICU, followed by an onslaught of rehab and doctors’ appointments. What we went through is unlike anything we have ever experienced.

Rewind to July 2021. I began my journey with Ameritas. While I had group life insurance previously, I never had permanent coverage. It was important for me to not only have sufficient coverage for myself, but also for Brian. Not being married and previously divorced keeps safety and protection top of my mind. I obtained coverage for both of us. Ameritas Life Insurance permanent coverage comes with a rider called Care4Life. It covers loved ones not only in death but can also function as a living benefit in the event of a terminal, chronic, or critical Illness. Having grown up with a grandmother with Alzheimer’s and another with rheumatoid arthritis, this rider was invaluable to me. Knowing that a portion of my potential long term health care needs were covered brought me peace of mind.

What I did not know in July 2021 was that Brian’s Aneurysm on 10/20/22 was a qualifying event. I can’t express how comforting it was to know that if needed, we could draw a portion of the death benefit while he’s alive to cover medical expenses, bills, and his time off work. It was one less stressor. I truly wish that everyone had this coverage. I never want anyone to have to go through what we have been through, but if I can help one more family be protected because of this nightmare, I’ve done my job.
